Shiatsu is an Eastern form of manual therapy. This type of massage originated from an ancient Eastern medical tradition, where the concept of “Chi”, the vital life force energy, is pivotal. “Chi” flows through a network of energy channels (“the meridians”) throughout the entire body. Obstructions in this flow can cause blockages that can give rise to health problems.
A Shiatsu massage works directly on this vital life force energy and helps to balance body and mind, which can alleviate any symptoms. During a massage session pressure is put on certain points on the meridians, using thumbs, fingers and the palms of the hand and sometimes using elbows, knees and the feet. Shiatsu can relieve headaches and alleviate problems in the back, neck and shoulders. This massage technique will also greatly ease stress and tension. It improves digestion, harmonizes the nervous system and boosts vitality.
This massage is normally given on a futon on the floor, or, in some cases, on the massage table. During a Shiatsu massage you wear loose and comfortable clothing, such as jogging bottoms and a T-shirt.
Shiatsu is eminently suited to people who prefer treating physical disorders in a natural way, it works preventively and gives you more energy.
